Every electronics station needs a place to solder things together, and most importantly, something that you can drop hot solder on. Luckily I stumbled on what is now my favorite little base material... a granite tile. I had a pretty big scrap piece left over from building my tablet, so I used it as a base and then added a couple little features on top to make it more of a proper station.
Like I said, the base is just a granite tile bought from a local hardware store. One side is polished, and when solder falls on it nothing gets burned or damaged. The downside is that it's tough to get things to stick to it, but if you rough up the surface and use some epoxy designed for stone then that'll hold well enough.
Soldering Iron Holder
This I purchased, it has a nice little holder for the soldering iron, as well as a little sponge and some alligator clips for holding wires.
